Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2001-D 1-cent WDDR-008, this doubled die reverse variety on the Lincoln Memorial Cent shows doubling on the left side of both legs on the Lincoln statue visible inside the Memorial, plus doubling on the left side of the seventh column to the right of the statue's legs. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc (2.50 grams, 19.05 mm diameter), featuring Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse that served the series from 1959 through 2008. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known for this variety. Obverse die markers include small die gouges below Lincoln's nose, providing a quick sorting feature for roll searchers. Reverse die markers are more numerous: a die gouge touching the right underside of the D in UNITED, a die gouge below the left side of the A in STATES, and a die gouge below the right side of the second T in STATES. These multiple reverse die gouges in the upper inscription area create a cluster of authentication points that collectively confirm the correct die. The doubling on the statue's legs within the Memorial is a common location for doubled die reverses in the Memorial Cent series, as the fine architectural detail of the Gasparro design provided ample opportunity for hub misalignment to manifest as visible doubling on the interior features of the building.
