2001-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Catalogued in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 2001-D 1c WDDR-007 and cross-referenced as CONECA 5-R-VIII and Coppercoins 2001D-1DR-005, this Lincoln Memorial Cent variety shows its doubling on the right side of both legs of the Lincoln statue within the Memorial colonnade. The reverse die carries multiple identifiable markers: a die gouge sits just to the right of the bottom of the N in UNITED; another die gouge appears above the right side of the N in CENT; a small die gouge dot is positioned to the left of the lower ninth Memorial column; and an additional die gouge lies just northwest of the E in EPU of E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, a small die gouge dot is found above and between the T and Y in LIBERTY, and a die gouge marks the lower front of the vest. The CONECA Class 5-R-VIII designation indicates a specific rotational component in the doubling mechanism. Lincoln Memorial Cents of the 2001-D date are copper-plated zinc (post-1982 composition), and the Philadelphia and Denver issues of this period maintain active collector followings within Lincoln cent variety specialists.
