2001-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team on a 2001 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-005 presents doubling at the bottom of the eighth and ninth bays of the Lincoln Memorial that creates the visual appearance of extra steps — a diagnostic that echoes the famous "extra columns" look sought on other Memorial Cent doubled dies. The Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and introduced in 1959, features the Lincoln Memorial structure with its twelve columns and interior bay spaces, and doubling in these architectural elements can produce visually striking effects that are relatively easy for collectors to identify even at moderate magnification. Die markers support attribution: the reverse shows die pitting between the U in UNITED and the upper first column, along with a small die gouge between the C and E in CENT. No significant obverse die markers were noted. The 2001-D was produced at the Denver Mint during a year when cent production remained in the billions, and five documented doubled die reverses for this date reflects the scale of die pair consumption. No known cross-references exist in other attribution systems, placing the Wexler catalog as the primary reference. The appearance of extra steps created by the doubling in the eighth and ninth bays provides a compelling search target for collectors sorting through quantities of 2001-D cents, as the stepped doubling effect is one of the more visually accessible forms of doubled die recognition on Memorial Cents.
