2001-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse is cataloged as Wexler 2001-D 1-cent WDDR-004 and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 2001D-1DR-006. The primary doubling appears at an angle on the left side of the seventh column to the right of the seated Lincoln statue within the Memorial. On the obverse, a small die gouge is visible inside the lower first zero of the date, and a small die gouge appears to the left of the bottom of the mint mark. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits above the left cornice, and another small die gouge is present above the left side of the Memorial building. Doubling on the Memorial's columns is one of the most common locations for detectable hub doubling on the reverse, as the narrow vertical columns amplify even minor misalignment between hub impressions. The dual attribution through both Wexler and Coppercoins systems provides independent confirmation of this variety. The 2001-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at Denver during the later years of Gasparro's Memorial reverse, and the multiple die gouges across both sides provide strong secondary markers for confirming this die pair.
