2001-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Bearing VarietyVista designations UVC-2983 / DMR-004, the 2001-D DDR-003 is a Denver-mint Lincoln Memorial cent with medium spread to the west, creating an extra column #7 from hand to foot of the seated Lincoln figure. Column #7, the first column to the right of the statue, is one of the most frequently doubled elements on Memorial reverses because its proximity to the design's center places it in the zone of maximum hub displacement during westward shifts. The hand-to-foot extent indicates nearly full-column doubling, making DDR-003 one of the more visually prominent varieties for this date. Confirmed at Early Die State (Stage A), coins struck from this die should exhibit sharp detail with minimal die wear or flow lines. Denver produced approximately 5.37 billion Lincoln cents in 2001, yet individual doubled die reverses represent a tiny fraction of that output. Collectors can distinguish westward column #7 doubling from eastward column #6 doubling by noting which side of the statue the ghost column appears on.
