Description

The 2000 (W) Proof Library of Congress Bicentennial Commemorative Ten Dollar Gold is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. With a mintage of 27,445, this is a scarce commemorative issue. This $10 piece was the first bimetallic coin ever produced by the United States Mint, composed of gold and platinum. The obverse features the hand of Minerva raising the torch of learning over the dome of the Jefferson Building, while the reverse displays the seal of the Library of Congress encircled by a laurel wreath. Designed by John M. Mercanti/Thomas D. Rogers. Struck in bi-met .900 au /.9995 pt, weighing 16.26 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99784. As the first U.S. bimetallic coin, the Library of Congress $10 holds a unique place in numismatic history. Its gold-and-platinum composition makes it both a numismatic and precious metals collectible.
