Error
Description
The first wavy-step proof die entered onto the Trail Dies site, this 2000-S Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent was found by Jean Lee. Sharp, moderate fluting line extension enters the stylobate under columns 2, 3, 11, and 12, with moderate, sharp step deviation under columns 5, 6, 7, and 8 at an offset direction of 190 degrees. Die markers at Stage A: obverse is EDS with none noted; reverse is EDS with doubling on the left side bay floors, the left URN, and the left edge of the cornice. Trail die effects arise from partial offset die contact during press operation, and their appearance on a proof issue is especially significant because proof dies typically receive more careful inspection. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm at the San Francisco Mint. As a proof-only variety, surviving examples maintain the mirror-like fields characteristic of the proof striking process.
