SKH-25c-2000P-01(MD) Spiked Head
Error
Description
Establishing the baseline entry for spiked heads on the 2000 Philadelphia Mint Maryland State Quarter, SKH-25c-2000P-01(MD) was the first die clash variety documented for this state design, originally reported on April 21, 2017. As the inaugural spiked head in the Maryland quarter sequence, it set the reference point from which subsequent entries — including the -02, -03, and -04 varieties — would be numbered. The Maryland State Quarter reverse, depicting the dome of the Maryland State House and surrounded by White Oak leaf clusters, was released as the seventh state in the program during the first quarter of 2000. Die clash events during production transferred elements of this distinctive state reverse into the Washington obverse die, creating a raised spike on the portrait. The first-documented status of -01 varieties carries particular weight for collectors who value priority of discovery and sequence-establishing entries. Philadelphia struck hundreds of millions of 2000 Maryland quarters during the height of State Quarters mania, when Americans were actively searching their change and banks reported increased demand for quarter rolls. This public enthusiasm created a feedback loop where more eyes examining more coins led to more variety discoveries. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the April 2017 first-report date means this variety was identified seventeen years after the coins were struck — a reminder that die variety discovery is an ongoing process that continues to expand the known catalog decades after production.
