Description

The turn of the millennium brought no pause to Lincoln Cent production, and CU-1C-2000-02 documents the second cataloged rim cud for the 2000 Philadelphia Mint issue. A die fragment broke away at the rim, producing the raised featureless area characteristic of cud errors on Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. The year 2000 carried symbolic weight as a calendar milestone, and Lincoln Memorial Cents from this date are widely saved by casual collectors and roll searchers, which paradoxically makes located die varieties more accessible since more specimens survive in higher grades. As the second cud for the date, CU-1C-2000-02 represents a different die failure from CU-1C-2000-01, with its own break location and featureless blob placement distinguishing it from the first cataloged variety. Philadelphia Mint struck approximately 5.5 billion cents in 2000, employing a large number of die pairs that generated opportunities for rim fractures across the production run.
