2000 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020
Error
Description
The 2000 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-020 is a doubled die reverse (DDR) variety, where die hubbing misalignment produced visible doubling on the reverse design. This variety was discovered on the 2000 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent, part of the Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series. Cross-referenced as Crawford: CDDR-017 Comments: The unusual nature of the doubling on this variety suggests that a hubbing technician stopped the single-squeeze hubbing process (something the Mint confirmed that the hubbing technicians have done even though they are not supposed to), reset the hub and die while rotating one of them 180 degrees, and then restarted the hubbing press to finish the hubbing process. We feel that it is highly unlikely that the hub rotated a perfect 180 degrees while snapping back into proper alignment during the hubbing squeeze. Die variety specialist Billy G. Crawford sent two images below. The first shows the high points of the apparent doubling. The second is an overlay of an inverted statue placed over the apparent doubling and shows how the inverted statue is a perfect match for the apparent doubling. The images are copyright Billy G. Crawford and are being used here with his permission.; Wexler Variety ID: 2000 1¢ WDDR-020.
