2000 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2000 1¢ WDDR-014, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2000 Lincoln Memorial cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Lincoln Memorial cent, designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse and Victor David Brenner for the obverse portrait, was produced from 1959 through 2008 in the copper-plated zinc composition adopted in 1982, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter and a plain edge. This is a replacement listing for a former entry that had been attributed as a "wavy steps" variety, a class of apparent doubling on the Memorial steps that is no longer believed to represent genuine doubled dies by the attribution community. The current WDDR-014 shows doubling manifesting as a bar extended from the upper knee to the lower leg, positioned to the right of the statue on the seventh column of the Lincoln Memorial. The seventh column area is one of the most frequently identified locations for doubled die varieties on Memorial cents because the statue of Lincoln seated within the Memorial provides fine detail where even minor hub displacement becomes detectable. Obverse die markers are particularly abundant on this die: a die gouge can be found below the T of TRUST, multiple small die gouges appear on Lincoln's nose, cheek, lips, and in the field under the nose, and a large horizontal die gouge is visible above and between the first and second zero of the date. The concentration of die gouges on the obverse portrait area suggests this die may have experienced some surface contamination or tool contact during preparation. No reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself have been noted. The reclassification history of this listing illustrates the ongoing refinement in doubled die attribution standards, where earlier attributions based on now-debunked mechanisms are systematically replaced with verified varieties.
