2000 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Eighth in the reverse doubled die census for the 2000 Lincoln Memorial cent, DDR-008 exhibits medium spread in a westward direction, manifesting as an extra column number 7 visible from hand level to shin level and an extra knee positioned between the normally visible knees of the seated Lincoln figure within Frank Gasparro's memorial facade. The phantom seventh column and duplicated knee detail result from a hub doubling event where the secondary impression displaced westward, creating ghost architectural elements that supplement the primary memorial design. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-2977 and DMR-010, documenting three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A ensures specimens with fresh die surfaces have been verified. The additional notation RDV-007 identifies the specific reverse design variant employed, connecting DDR-008 to the hub lineage shared by other Lincoln Memorial cent DDRs carrying this designation. Philadelphia struck approximately 5.50 billion cents in 2000, an enormous output that consumed thousands of working dies. The hand-to-shin range of the extra column distinguishes DDR-008 from DDR-003 (knee to shin) by extending the phantom column's visible span higher into the memorial interior, while the extra knee between the normal knees provides a particularly distinctive diagnostic. Collectors should examine the memorial interior between the sixth and seventh column positions under 10-15x magnification, focusing on the area from hand level to shin level and looking for both the displaced column and the additional knee detail.
