1999 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-018
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1999 1¢ WDDR-018, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays doubling on the lower right side of the 6th column to the left of the statue's lower legs, with additional doubling visible between the statue's lower legs — localized displacement features within the fine architectural detail of the Lincoln Memorial's columned interior. The cross-reference notes carry an important editorial comment: "This is a replacement listing. The original listing was a 'wavy steps' variety and these are no longer believed to be doubled dies" — documenting a reclassification event where advances in understanding die variety mechanisms led to the original WDDR-018 being delisted and replaced with this different die's documentation. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge below the first nine in the date. The reverse features a concentrated set of diagnostic markers: strong die clash marks in the lower 3rd, 4th, and 9th Memorial bays, strong feeder finger scrapes running from southeast to northwest through the lower right side of the reverse, and a small die gouge to the left of the top of the U in UNITED. The feeder finger scrapes — linear marks caused by the mechanical fingers that feed planchets into the striking chamber — represent a distinct category of die damage separate from the hub doubling itself. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse and Victor David Brenner for the obverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1999 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The replacement listing history of this WDDR number illustrates how variety attribution evolves as the numismatic community's collective understanding of die variety mechanisms advances over time.
