1999 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

The 1999 WDDR-001 Lincoln Memorial cent is a notable doubled die reverse that serves as a replacement listing for what was originally cataloged as a "wavy steps" variety. The numismatic community subsequently determined that wavy steps varieties are not true doubled dies, leading to this reclassification. The current listing documents genuine hub doubling visible on the lower left side of the 7th column to the right of the lower statue, along with an extra knee that can be seen between the statue's legs, a compelling pickup point for cherry-pickers. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a copper-plated zinc planchet (2.5 grams, 19 mm diameter), the obverse presents a small die gouge above the left side of the first 9 in the date as its primary authentication marker. The reverse shows a strong die scratch running southeast from the bottom of the steps south of the 7th column, plus parallel die scratches above the T in CENT. This variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1999 1c WDDR-001 and was documented by the Wexler Team. The Lincoln Memorial cent's intricate reverse design, featuring the seated Lincoln statue visible through the Memorial's open central bay, makes it especially conducive to displaying hub doubling in ways that are both visually interesting and numismatically significant.
