1999 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-014

Description

Fourteenth in the prolific reverse doubled die census for the 1999 Lincoln Memorial cent, DDR-014 displays medium spread in a slightly rotated clockwise direction, manifesting as an extra column number 7 visible from the hand to the ankle of the seated Lincoln figure in Frank Gasparro's memorial facade. The slightly rotated CW component adds a subtle angular displacement to the predominantly westward spread, creating a phantom column that may show slight curvature rather than perfectly straight vertical doubling. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-3112 and DMR-017, tracking three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A ensures specimens with fresh die surfaces have been documented. Philadelphia's 1999 production of approximately 5.24 billion cents generated the extreme die consumption that produced this remarkably deep DDR census, with at least fourteen distinct reverse dies documented as carrying some form of the phantom seventh column phenomenon. The hand-to-ankle vertical range on DDR-014 covers the broadest span yet documented in the 1999 family, extending from the upper body through the full torso and legs of the seated figure — a more extensive view of the phantom column than the narrower ranges seen on DDR-003 (knee to foot), DDR-008 (shin to pedestal), or DDR-012 (hand to knee). The reverse design variant RDV-007 connects this die to the same hub lineage as the other 1999 phantom column DDRs. Collectors examining this variety should focus on the interior of the memorial between the sixth and seventh columns, using 10-15x magnification to trace the phantom column from Lincoln's hand level down through the ankle area.
