Description

The 1999 Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-011 displays one of the more visually diagnostic doubled die reverse features in the series: a double extra column at position #7 on the Lincoln Memorial facade, visible from the elbow height to the hand and continuing from the hand down to the ankle level. Column doubling on the Memorial Cent reverse is a well-established diagnostic category among variety collectors, as Frank Gasparro's detailed architectural rendering of the Lincoln Memorial provides twelve distinct columns that can each manifest doubling independently. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-3079 with die marriage reference DMR-014 and identified as using the RDV-007 reverse die variety, this Philadelphia Mint variety carries a diagnostic die marker: a die scratch running west from the 1 of the date to the vest area on the obverse, visible in early die state. Stage A confirms the reverse in EDS alongside this die scratch marker, while Stage B in mid-die state and Stage C in late die state remain unconfirmed. The column #7 doubling — creating a visible shadow or ghost column alongside the intended one — is among the most recognizable Memorial Cent reverse varieties because the architectural columns are prominent design elements that make even moderate doubling easy to detect with basic magnification.
