1999 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Seventh in the 1999 Lincoln Memorial cent DDR census, DDR-007 exhibits medium westward spread producing an extra column number 7 visible from the elbow to the knee of the seated Lincoln figure. VarietyVista documented this die under UVC-2972 and DMR-009, tracking three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces are at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A indicates specimens with fresh die surfaces have been examined. The RDV-007 reverse design variant links DDR-007 to the same hub lineage shared by the other 1999 phantom column varieties. Philadelphia's production of approximately 5.24 billion cents in 1999 drove the consumption of hundreds of reverse dies, and the number of independent hub doubling events that produced extra column varieties across this date suggests a systemic characteristic of the hubbing process during this production period rather than isolated accidents. The elbow-to-knee range of the extra column on DDR-007 covers the mid-section of the memorial interior, bridging the gap between DDR-004's upper face-to-knee span and DDR-008's lower shin-to-pedestal zone. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse design, featuring the seated president visible through the central opening of the memorial building, creates a uniquely information-rich die surface where architectural column spacing provides an absolute reference grid for measuring hub displacement. The phantom seventh column appears because the westward shift of the secondary hub impression relocates column six's image into the space between columns six and seven, creating what appears to be an additional architectural element that does not exist on the actual memorial building.
