Description

Medium eastward spread produces an extra lower column number 6 at the pedestal level — a ghost column base appearing alongside the original — on this 1999 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-005 with die classification UVC-2963, die marriage DMR-007, and reverse design variant RDV-007, the variety is documented with a particularly informative die state progression: Stage B shows the reverse at mid die state with a die crack developing from Lincoln's eye northward to the rim through the E of WE, while the obverse is also at mid die state. This die crack serves as a strong diagnostic marker for Stage B specimens. Early and late die states remain unconfirmed. The pedestal-level doubling on column 6 differs from the upper-column extra columns seen on some Memorial Cent DDRs — the pedestal is the base structure supporting the column, and displaced doubling here creates a shadow foundation rather than a ghost shaft. Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse was in its forty-first year on the 1999 cent, approaching the final decade before the 2009 Bicentennial designs replaced it. Struck on copper-plated zinc at 19mm. Look for the extra column base at pedestal height on column 6, and check for the progressive die crack from Lincoln's eye through E of WE on mid die state examples.
