Error
Description
Sixth spiked head documented on the 1999 Philadelphia Mint Georgia State Quarter, this variety was cataloged on September 27, 2018, by Cuds on Coins and represents the continued expansion of die clash documentation for one of the five inaugural State Quarter designs. Georgia's reverse featured a peach, the state outline, live oak branches framing the design, and the state motto "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation" — a composition of organic and geometric elements that could leave varied impressions when transferred to the obverse die during a clash event. Six spiked heads from a State Quarter date indicates that die clash events occurred with regularity during the 1999-P Georgia production run, consistent with the enormous mintages that characterized the program's inaugural year. The 50 State Quarters program launched with unprecedented public enthusiasm in 1999, and the five states honored that year — Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut — received massive production allocations to meet collector demand. This high-volume production, involving many die pairs operating at high speeds, created the statistical conditions necessary for multiple die clash events. Each of the six spiked heads is distinguished by its unique spike characteristics on Washington's portrait — the obverse design that remained constant across all State Quarter issues. The 1999 Georgia Quarter spiked heads offer collectors a window into die clash behavior during the most intensely produced quarters in United States history, where public demand drove production volumes to levels previously unseen for the denomination.
