1999 Type II Counter Clash CCL(T2)-25c-1999-01

Description

Among the rarest and most visually striking counter-clash varieties in the State Quarter series, CCL(T2)-25c-1999-01 is a Type II counterclash on the 1999-P Delaware State Quarter — the first issue in the 50 State Quarters program. The design text CAESAR RODNEY is duplicated on the reverse, with the ghost impression positioned just south of the normal lettering. RODNEY is the most easily isolated element because it falls entirely in the open field, completely separated from its normal counterpart. At the time of attribution only two specimens had been documented, placing this variety firmly in the extreme-rarity tier. Type II counterclashes frequently occur alongside other forms of miscellaneous die damage, and this coin exhibits a curved die dent between the letters AWA of DELAWARE consistent with that pattern. Delaware, admitted as the first U.S. state in 1787, was accordingly the first quarter issued in 1999, making this counter-clash variety not only exceedingly rare but historically significant within the program.
