Description
Moderate fluting line extension into the stylobate under columns 2 and 3, with moderate step deviation under columns 5, 6, 7, and 8 at an offset direction of 190 degrees, mark this Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent trail die variety. Die markers at Stage C: obverse at LDS with none observed; reverse at LDS with die scratching in the upper part of bay 1 and a die dot over the left base of the Memorial building. Trail die errors result from partially offset contact between die faces during press operation. The reverse die scratching in bay 1 and the positioned die dot provide specific attribution markers. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm, this is the second cataloged trail die reverse for the 1999-D date. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse architecture, with its precisely rendered bays and bases, makes trail die deviations in the stylobate and step areas measurable against known reference points.
