Description

Struck during the final year of the classic Washington Quarter design before the State Quarter program transformed the series beginning in 1999, this 1998 Philadelphia rim cud CU-25c-1998P-01R carries particular significance as a closing-era variety. John Flanagan's heraldic eagle reverse, which had graced the Washington Quarter since 1932, would not appear again on circulation strikes after 1998, making cud varieties from this terminal year last examples of die fractures on the original design. The cud formed when a die rim fragment broke away under the cumulative stress of high-speed production, leaving a void that planchet metal filled during subsequent strikes to create the raised featureless mass at the rim. The 1998-P was struck in standard clad copper-nickel composition at the Philadelphia Mint. Attributed by Cuds on Coins, this first-cataloged cud for the 1998 Philadelphia quarter documents a specific die failure from the last production run of a sixty-six-year design. Collectors who specialize in end-of-series varieties will find this cud occupies a unique position at the boundary between the classic and modern Washington Quarter eras.
