1998-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-25C-1998D-01
Error
Description
Discovered by Hegeon Kwun and cataloged by MadDieClashes as ADC-25c-1998D-01, this 1998-D Washington Quarter displays an atypical die clash — a specialized form of die clash where the design transfer occurs at an unusual angle or position relative to the normal die alignment. Unlike standard die clashes where the dies meet in their normal coaxial orientation, atypical clashes result from the dies contacting at a tilted or shifted angle, producing transferred design elements in unexpected locations. On the obverse, unabraded clash marks of the perimeter of the eagle's wings appear in front of Washington's face, neck, and back of head. Within the eagle's wings on the reverse, much of Washington's portrait is visible as a transferred impression. The Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in cupronickel-clad copper at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter, with John Flanagan's obverse portrait and the heraldic eagle reverse used from 1932 through 1998 before the State Quarters program began in 1999. The position of the clash marks on this coin serves as the die markers for attribution, as the unabraded nature of the clash impressions indicates the die was not resurfaced after the clashing event, preserving the full transferred design details through the remainder of the die's production run.
