Description

The 1998-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-026 is identified by a specific feature on the reverse: a bar that extends from below the statue's hand to the middle of the leg to the right of the statue, positioned at the seventh column of the Lincoln Memorial design. This extension of the bar is the primary doubling-related diagnostic for this variety. The Wexler Variety ID is 1998-D 1¢ WDDR-026. Obverse die markers are documented in detail. A die chip is present within the upper loop of the D mintmark. A second die chip is present above and between the B and E of LIBERTY. Several approximately vertical die scratches run through and around the ER in LIBERTY. A fourth die chip is present within the lower loop of the U in TRUST. The concentration of die chips at the D mintmark and in LIBERTY creates a distinctive marker set on the obverse that assists with attributing individual specimens. Collectors searching for this variety should begin by examining the bar feature at the seventh Memorial column on the reverse, then cross-check the obverse die chip cluster — particularly the mintmark die chip and the ER scratches — before finalizing the attribution.
