1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-023
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1998-D 1-cent WDDR-023, this Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse displays a bar extending from the bottom of the seated Lincoln statue's hand to the lower leg on the seventh column — the characteristic column 7 doubling seen across many late-era Memorial Cent DDR varieties. The obverse die contributes its own features: a die crack extending from Lincoln's brow north to the hairline and a die chip below the second T of TRUST, indicating this obverse die had accumulated significant stress damage. The reverse die marker — a small die chip within the upper E of AMERICA — provides a tertiary identification feature. No cross-references outside the Wexler system are known. The 1998-D represents one of the final Lincoln Memorial Cent dates struck at Denver before the series transitioned to the Bicentennial reverses in 2009, and the Denver Mint's substantial production volume generated numerous die pairs with varying characteristics. The description of the doubling as a "bar" rather than the typical "extra column" language suggests the doubled image was wide enough to appear as a solid raised strip connecting the hand to the lower leg — a relatively strong expression of column 7 displacement that would be detectable under low magnification.
