1998-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
Error
Description
An extended bar running from the upper hand to the lower foot, positioned to the right of the Lincoln statue on the seventh column, defines the doubled die characteristic of WDDR-019 on the 1998 Denver Lincoln Memorial Cent. This bar represents doubled die spread that creates a linear secondary impression along the statue's right side, tracking from hand to foot through the narrow gap between the statue and the adjacent column. Obverse die markers provide three precise attribution points: a die chip southwest of the mintmark on Lincoln's vest, a die chip well below the I of IN, and a die chip centered between and well above the 9 and 8 of the date. The reverse shows no significant die markers beyond the doubling itself. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1998-D 1¢ WDDR-019 with no other known attributions, this variety was documented by the Wexler Team. Denver struck 5,225,353,500 Lincoln Cents in 1998, an enormous production run that provided vast material for variety discovery. The three obverse die chips — each in a different location relative to distinct design elements — create a triangulation system for rapid die identification, allowing cherry-pickers to screen obverses quickly before investing time in the more detailed reverse examination needed to confirm the doubled die bar along column seven.
