1998-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Rather than doubling on the Memorial's vertical columns, DDR-003 on the 1998-D Lincoln cent shows medium spread as a clockwise-rotated extra ceiling line above the Lincoln statue — a horizontal doubling effect targeting the Memorial's ceiling architecture instead of its columnar elements. The rotated clockwise displacement tilts the secondary ceiling image slightly relative to the primary, producing a subtle angular separation visible under magnification above the seated figure. This ceiling-based spread distinguishes DDR-003 from the column varieties that dominate Lincoln Memorial cent DDR catalogs. Struck at the Denver Mint, this variety is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-3060 and DMR-004 across three die stages: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B at Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C where the reverse reaches Late Die State while the obverse remains at Mid Die State — an asymmetric progression indicating the reverse die deteriorated faster than its obverse partner. The ceiling doubling is best observed with the coin oriented to examine the horizontal lines directly above the statue.
