1998-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Medium spread with a strong counter-clockwise rotational component defines this 1998-D Lincoln Memorial cent DDR-001, where the hub rotation produced a dramatic extra column visible as two flutings on column number 7, spanning from the statue's hand to its shoulder area. This CCW-rotated hubbing effect is characteristic of Class V pivoted hub doubling, where the hub and die were misaligned around a rotational axis during impression. VarietyVista assigned this die pair UVC-2952 with die markers reference DMR-002, tracking three die stages. Stage A shows both the reverse and obverse at early-to-mid die state. Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed, meaning the die may have been pulled from service before significant deterioration occurred. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and in use from 1959 through 2008, features twelve individual columns that provide exceptional diagnostic surfaces for doubled die identification. Column 7, counting from left to right, sits in the zone between the statue's hand and shoulder, and the extra fluting lines created by the rotational doubling are distinct from the normal column architecture. Denver produced 5.23 billion cents in 1998, yet the DDR-001 die pair would have accounted for only a tiny fraction of that output. As the primary DDR listing for the date, this variety represents the most significant reverse hub doubling error documented for 1998-D cents and is a worthwhile target for variety specialists working through Memorial cent DDR inventories.
