1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-034

Description

Displaying a distinctive bar extending from the upper foot to the upper base to the right of the statue on the seventh column, this 1997 Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-034 presents an unusual form of reverse doubling in the architectural details of Frank Gasparro's design. The Memorial reverse, in use since 1959, features twelve visible columns where intricate architectural elements provide numerous locations for identifiable hub doubling. Obverse die markers include a die gouge at the rim below the L in LIBERTY, a die gouge at the rim over the left side of the W in WE, a die gouge at the rim above the O in GOD, and a die gouge at the rim over the right side of the second T in TRUST. On the reverse, a light die scratch runs northeast to southwest inside the upper fifth memorial bay. The concentration of rim-adjacent die gouges on the obverse provides multiple diagnostic points for attribution. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1997 1c WDDR-034.
