1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-027

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1997 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a bar extended from the shoulder to the top of the knee to the left of the statue on the sixth column of the Lincoln Memorial. On the obverse, a die scratch extends south from the rim east of the second T of TRUST, a die chip appears east of the center of the I on IN, and another die chip sits centered below the 9 and 7 of the date. On the reverse, a small die chip can be found just above the doubling on the sixth column at the level of the statue's neck. The extra column detail on the sixth bay of the Memorial is a classic form of doubled die reverse on Lincoln Memorial cents, where secondary hub impressions create partial architectural elements that do not exist on the undoubled design. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1997 cent was produced in an era of high-volume coinage where thousands of working dies were prepared annually. The detailed obverse die markers, particularly the die chips near IN and below the date, provide reliable attribution points for variety collectors examining this WDDR in hand.
