1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-021

Description

Listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1997 1c WDDR-021, this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent variety shows doubling in the form of a bar extending from the top of the knee to the top of the foot, to the left of the statue at the sixth column. A minor bar is also present to the right of the statue's left shin. These bar-like extensions of column and statue detail are characteristic of strong Memorial cent DDR varieties where the Lincoln statue's defined edges show misalignment clearly. Obverse die markers include a die chip below the E of LIBERTY, a die chip below the I and B of LIBERTY, a die chip touching the lower right side of the 7 in the date, and a die gouge under the 7. Reverse markers include a die gouge between the upper E of ONE and the upper C of CENT. Lincoln Memorial cents were designed by Frank Gasparro in 1959 to mark the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The 1997 Philadelphia cent is copper-plated zinc. The statue doubling and shin bar, combined with the distinctive die chip pattern below LIBERTY, make this variety confirmable with confidence when all markers are present and examined together.
