1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1997 1-cent WDDR-013, this Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows a distinctive bar extending from the bottom of the Lincoln statue's hand down to the lower leg on the left side of the statue, visible on the sixth column from the left within the Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial Cent, designed by Victor David Brenner (obverse) and Frank Gasparro (reverse), was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. The bar-like doubling connecting the statue's hand to its lower leg represents a vertical spread in the fine interior details of the Lincoln Memorial, where the seated Lincoln figure is rendered at miniature scale within the columned building facade. Obverse die markers include a die gouge well left of the I of IN. The reverse carries multiple die chips: within the D of UNITED, to the left of and touching the lower right side of the A of STATES, touching the top of the P of PLURIBUS, and touching the upper left L of PLURIBUS. The concentration of die chips around the STATES and PLURIBUS lettering suggests this die experienced significant wear and minor deterioration across its working life.
