1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Documented by John A. Wexler, WDDR-002 on the 1997 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows doubling on the lower left side of the 7th Memorial column to the right of the Lincoln statue's feet — a localized effect confined to the base of the westernmost column near the pedestal zone. Unlike the broader column spreads cataloged as DDR-002 and DDR-005 for this same year, WDDR-002 concentrates its doubling in a small area where the column meets its architectural base, making it a more subtle variety that requires targeted examination of the correct zone under magnification. Reverse die markers include a small die gouge to the left of the F in designer Frank Gasparro's FG initials — a distinctive marker positioned near the lower right of the Memorial design. No significant obverse die markers have been documented. The Wexler catalog lists no known cross-references to other attribution systems for this variety. Among the multiple 1997 column DDRs, WDDR-002 occupies a distinct niche: its foot-level column doubling provides a different diagnostic than the hand-to-ankle and elbow-to-knee spreads documented on the VarietyVista-cataloged DDR-002 and DDR-005.
