1997 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Discovered by John A. Wexler, the 1997 Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDR-001 shows doubling on the central left side of the seventh Memorial column to the right of the statue's upper legs. Two sets of die markers aid in attribution. On the obverse, a die gouge sits to the right of the bottom of the 1, and two small die gouges appear below the second 9 in the date. The reverse carries a small die gouge to the left of the F in FG. While the doubling is confined to a single column area, its position adjacent to the Lincoln statue makes it a visually interesting variety for Memorial Cent specialists. The column doubling, when examined under magnification, reveals a distinct secondary impression that separates from the primary column edge—a diagnostic that becomes more apparent on well-struck, uncirculated examples where the column details remain crisp and undisturbed by wear.
