Description

A dual-directional trail die at 080 degrees and 260 degrees, this 1996 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent variety was discovered by John Rosenberg. Trail lines are visible emanating from the words UNITED STATES, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the NE of ONE, and the word CENT, running in both the 080-degree and 260-degree directions simultaneously. The dual directionality distinguishes this from single-direction trail dies, indicating the die experienced lateral movement in opposing directions during the striking process. Cataloged at Stage C, the obverse is LDS with no significant markers noted. The reverse is LDS and exhibits a large struck-through foreign object in the upper part of bays 5, 6, and 7 of the Lincoln Memorial — an additional error present alongside the trail die effect. The combination of a dual-directional trail die with a struck-through foreign object on the same coin documents two independent minting anomalies from a single die pair.
