Description

Found by Jeremy Gardner, this Trail Dies-cataloged Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent shows trail lines from the top left corners of the letters in EPU, with additional trails from the TATE of STATES and the ER of AMERICA at an offset direction of 330 degrees. The wide distribution of trail effects across both the motto and multiple legend inscriptions documents substantial partial die contact during this production event. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with none noted; reverse at MDS with old die gouges just above and to the left of the left corner of the stylobate and another die gouge just below the left corner of the base line. The two reverse die gouges flanking the stylobate corner provide precise attribution reference points. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm at the Philadelphia Mint during the late era of the Memorial design.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none noted.
  • Reverse is MDS – old die gouges are seen just above and to the left of the left corner of the stylobate. Another die gouge is seen just below the left corner of the base line.
