Description

Found by Louis Schaeffer, this Trail Dies-cataloged Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent shows trail lines from the right bottom corners of the R in PLURIBUS and the NUM of UNUM, plus trail lines from the E of ONE, at an offset direction of 140 degrees. The 140-degree offset places trail extensions toward the southeast of the source letters. Die markers at Stage C: obverse at LDS with two groups of small die gouges between the words IN and LIBERTY; reverse at LDS with two die gouges on either side of the T in CENT. The symmetric die gouges flanking the T of CENT provide a distinctive reverse attribution marker. Trail die effects result from partial offset die contact during press operation. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1996-P was part of the long-running Memorial reverse series that served from 1959 through 2008.

Die Markers

  • Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – two groups of small die gouges between the words IN and LIBERTY.
  • Reverse is LDS – two die gouges on either side of the T in CENT.
