1996-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files as 1996-D 1-cent WDDR-002, this Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent is a replacement variety for the original listing. The doubling manifests as a bar extended from the middle of the knee to the shin, appearing to the right of the statue on the seventh column of the Memorial building. Obverse die markers include a die gouge left of the mintmark, a die gouge centered below the E and R of LIBERTY, and a die gouge right of the lower first T of TRUST. The reverse carries an extensive suite of gouges: a strong gouge between the lower T and E of UNITED, a strong gouge between the first A and M of AMERICA, a gouge under the left upright of R of AMERICA, a gouge just right of the second dot, and two gouges right of the lower and upper T of CENT. The bar-like extension near the seventh column statue provides the primary doubled die diagnostic, while the concentration of die gouges across both sides offers multiple confirmation points for definitive attribution of this replacement variety.
