Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-3059 (DMR-005), DDR-002 of the 1996-D Lincoln Memorial Cent displays a light spread directed eastward that manifests as an extra set of knees on the Lincoln Memorial's structural elements. The "extra knees" designation refers to doubling on the column supports of Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, where displacement creates the visual impression of duplicated structural joints — a diagnostic distinguishing DDR-002 from other 1996-D doubled dies showing spread in different locations. The Memorial reverse, in production since 1959, features architectural detail fine enough to register even light hub doubling, as the columns, steps, and supports provide crisp geometric edges against which displacement becomes apparent. Denver's 1996 cent production was substantial, placing this variety within a high-output environment where individual die varieties represent a tiny fraction of total coinage. Collectors should examine the Memorial's structural elements — particularly column supports at their junction points — under magnification, comparing against a normal 1996-D to identify the characteristic extra knees.
