The 1995 (W) Special Olympics Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the West Point Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 89,301 examples. Authorized to commemorate the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven, Connecticut, this dollar honored Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded the Special Olympics in 1968. The obverse features a portrait of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics — the first U.S. coin to depict a living woman, while the reverse displays a long-stemmed rose and a Special Olympics medal on a ribbon, with Shriver's quote: 'As we hope for the best in them, hope is reborn in us'. Designed by T. James Ferrell/Thomas D. Rogers. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9704. Beyond its numismatic significance as the first coin depicting a living woman, the Special Olympics dollar celebrates an organization that has transformed the lives of millions of athletes with intellectual disabilities worldwide.
