Description

The 1995 (S) Proof Civil War Dollar is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 437,114 examples. Authorized to raise funds for the preservation of Civil War battlefields, this dollar was part of a three-coin program designed by noted Civil War artist Don Troiani. The obverse features a Union soldier offering a canteen to a wounded Confederate soldier, symbolizing reconciliation, while the reverse displays a view of the Gettysburg landscape with a quote from Joshua Chamberlain: 'In great deeds something abides'. Designed by Civil War/Don Troiani/John Mercanti. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9701. The Civil War dollar's Troiani-designed obverse of Union and Confederate soldiers sharing water is one of the most poignant scenes in U.S. commemorative coinage.
