Description

The 1995 (P) Civil War Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 45,866, this is a scarce commemorative issue. Authorized to raise funds for the preservation of Civil War battlefields, this dollar was part of a three-coin program designed by noted Civil War artist Don Troiani. The obverse features a Union soldier offering a canteen to a wounded Confederate soldier, symbolizing reconciliation, while the reverse displays a view of the Gettysburg landscape with a quote from Joshua Chamberlain: 'In great deeds something abides'. Designed by Civil War/Don Troiani/John Mercanti. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9700. The Civil War dollar's Troiani-designed obverse of Union and Confederate soldiers sharing water is one of the most poignant scenes in U.S. commemorative coinage.
