The 1995 (S) Proof Civil War Battlefield Commemorative Half Dollar is a proof commemorative half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 317,396 examples. Part of the 1995 Civil War Battlefield Preservation three-coin program, this half dollar features a drummer boy, who symbolizes the youth and innocence drawn into the conflict. The obverse features a young Civil War drummer boy in uniform, while the reverse displays a Civil War cannon on a battlefield with the inscription 'Enriching Our Future by Preserving Our Past'. Designed by Don Troiani/T. James Ferrell. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9699. The Civil War half dollar's drummer boy design is both historically evocative and emotionally compelling, representing the youngest participants in America's bloodiest conflict.
