Description

First documented rim cud for the 1995 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, this variety records a die rim separation where the broken fragment fell away and its cavity filled with metal during striking, producing the characteristic raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. Rim cuds obliterate whatever design detail occupied the affected area — whether inscription, a star, or a portion of Washington's portrait — replacing it with a blank raised blob often visible without magnification. The 1995-P quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition during the penultimate year before the State Quarters program transformed the series beginning in 1999. Production volume at Philadelphia remained substantial, consuming numerous die pairs across extended press runs. The following year would bring a special "W" mint mark Washington Quarter honoring the denomination's sixtieth anniversary, but 1995-P carried the standard design in continuous use since 1932.
