Description

Attributed by Trail Dies, this trail die reverse on a 1995 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent documents two die stages showing progressive deterioration. Stage B in mid die state shows no noted obverse markers, while the reverse in mid die state displays three die gouges around the O of ONE and three die gouges around the designer's initials. Stage C advances to late die state with no noted obverse markers, and the reverse in late die state shows a die dot in the middle of the C in AMERICA. The progression from Stage B to Stage C captures the development of new die markers — specifically the die dot in AMERICA — as the die continued in service. A trail die forms when hub-to-die misalignment during hubbing creates a partial secondary impression that trails across the die surface, transferring faint displaced design elements onto struck coins. The 1995 Philadelphia Mint is one of the most intensely examined dates in the Lincoln Cent series due to the famous 1995 DDO-001, and the heightened scrutiny likely contributed to trail die discoveries.
