Description

The 1995 (D) Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games Gymnastics Dollar was struck at the Denver Mint as a cent in the Modern Commemorative Dollars (1982-Date) series. With a mintage of 42,497, this is a scarce issue β€” the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue, authorized by Congress to honor significant American events, people, and institutions and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Auction record: $7,475 NG 09-22-2010 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9716.
