Description

Reaching Stage C late die state, 1994P-1DER-003WS is the third cataloged reverse trail die for the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent. The WS suffix designates a wavy steps variety — one where the Memorial's staircase shows lateral displacement but without the pronounced trailing lines that earn the additional T designation. At LDS, the obverse shows no observed die markers, while the reverse carries die gouges on the bottom of the E in ONE. The absence of obverse markers combined with reverse-only damage suggests a die pair where the obverse die remained relatively clean through its service life while the reverse accumulated localized surface damage. Stage C classification places this die well into its operational life, past the mid die state threshold where initial wear patterns stabilize, and into the territory where progressive deterioration begins to alter design details beyond simple softening.

Die Markers

  • Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none observed
  • Reverse is LDS – die gouges on the bottom of the E in ONE.
