1994 Radical MAD Die Clash MDC-1C-1994-01

Description

Found by Jody and Chris Gomez, MDC-1c-1994-01 is a radical MAD (misaligned die) clash on the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln cent characterized by fragments of the letters TS from STATES (on the reverse die) visible on the lapel and Lincoln's shoulder. The hammer die was rotated approximately 20 degrees counterclockwise, misaligned horizontally about 35%, and ostensibly tilted downward toward the southwest — a combination that left only the faint traces of TS transferred to the obverse. Edge portions of the reverse die's field also appear along the lapel and near the date. MAD clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies contact each other without a planchet between them while one die is displaced from its normal centered position, and the severity of this example — with rotation, horizontal offset, and tilt all contributing — places it among the more complex MAD clash geometries documented on Lincoln cents.
