Description

Third rim cud from the 1994 Denver Mint Washington Quarter, cataloged by Cuds on Coins within the Washington Clad and Silver Proof Quarters 1965-1998 series. A major die break at the rim caused a section of the die to fracture and separate, leaving a cavity that filled with planchet metal under the tremendous pressure of the coining press — typically 35 to 45 tons for a quarter dollar. The resulting raised, featureless mass at the coin's edge is the signature characteristic of a cud error, distinguishing it from retained die breaks where the fractured section remains in place. Denver struck approximately 880 million quarters in 1994, requiring extensive die usage throughout the production year. Three cuds from a single Denver date suggests multiple die pairs experienced rim failure, a pattern that can indicate either localized production conditions or broader die steel quality issues during that manufacturing run. No independent cross-references have been assigned to this variety.
