Description

The "T" suffix on 1994D-1DER-023T denotes a tilted trail die — a subclass where the die surface irregularity creating the trail die effect originated from a slight angular misalignment rather than the lateral displacement that produces wavy steps. Discovered by Aisha Shahid and documented by Trail Dies, this variety on the 1994 Denver Lincoln Memorial cent is recorded at Stage B. The obverse at mid-die-state shows a small die gouge below the word IN, located in the open field beneath the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse, also at mid-die-state, features two small die gouges below and to the left of the U in UNITED. Tilted trail dies are less commonly cataloged than their wavy-step counterparts, making the "T" suffix a meaningful classification marker within the trail die taxonomy. The combination of a single obverse gouge in the motto area and paired reverse gouges near the first letter of UNITED provides a clear two-point attribution system for confirming this die pair on candidate specimens.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen below the word IN.
  • Reverse is MDS – two small die gouges are seen below left of the U in UNITED.
